Description

Black and white cabinet photograph of Independence Hall and Independence Square, taken c.1880-1890 from the Drexel Building formerly standing on the east side of 5th Street. Independence Hall with its tower figures prominently towards the front right of this view, with the Public Ledger building in the middle distance. At the front left is the rear of the United States District Court House, demolished in 1901. An uncompleted Philadelphia City Hall [without its trademark tower and statue of William Penn] looms large in the background.
