Urban Village Exhibit, Ex 24
Johnson House, 6306 Germantown Avenue.
Label: Johnson House illustrates the characteristic German tradition of siting houses close to the street. The pent roof is the most obvious German architectural feature. Built between 1765 and 1768, Johnson House was occupied by John Johnson, Jr. and his wife Rachel Livezey. This was a marriage between individuals of similar religious, social, and economic backgrounds. Rachel Livezey was from a prominent Germantown English family, while the Johnsons were German. The couple illustrates the continuing process of cultural assimilation of the German population into the dominant English culture of the colony (Footnote 11. Stephanie G.
