Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 29. Photograph a: [top] is a photograph of the Keyser House located at 6205 Germantown Avenue (the photograph caption refers to it as the Keyser, or Prichett House). See catalog number 2013.5.1.28a. This photograpg differs from catalog number 2013.5.1.28a in that this photograpg appears to have been taken at an earlier time. Germantown Avenue is not yet brick paved but a dirt road. The even brick sidewalk in 2013.5.1.28a is here seen as dirt raised above the dirt road by a low stone wall. Two "bulkheads" leading to a basement are shown in this prhotgraph whereas only one bulkhead is visible in 2013.5.1.28a. The front steps in this photograph lead out toward Germantown Avenue rather than running perpendicular to Germantown Avenue. No ivy is growing on the side building wall and a high wooden fence fronts the space between the Keyser House and the building next door. It would appear that a substantial "grading of Germantown Avenue and the sidewalk occurred by the time the photograph was taken in 2013.5.1.28a. Original photograph year 1904. Photograph b: [bottom] is a photograph of Washington Tavern (see catalog number 2013.5.1.10c). This photograph was taken at a much later date than the photograph in 2013.5.1.10c. This photograph shows the building as stucco covered or whitewashed rather than of stone. This photograph shows a front and side view with a brick paved Germantown Avenue with trolley tracks embedded in the bricks. Utility poles with wiring are clearly visible. To the right are additional buildings. A portion of the rear and side are visible with a fence enclosing an area on the side of the building. A fire hydrant is seen directly in front of the side fencing. A sign above the right front entrance clearly identifies this building as the Washington House. There is an additional sign protruding from the building above the sidewalk advertising what appears to be a brand of beer. A man can be seen walking under the protruding sign. Two "bulkheads" are visible - one below the Washington House sign and one directly on the side of the building. The building roof is seamed metal and there are three dormer windows built into the roof line. Original photograph year 1904.
