Letter, written in ink on two sheets of 8 x 10" lined paper with "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction, Harrisburg" letterhead, dated July 23, 1879. It contains the following, written on one side of each sheet:
"Mr. W. Justice Esq.
My dear Sir:- I am aware of Mr. Stitzer's initiative.
There are now but 36 children in the school, and nearly one half of them are sixteen or between fifteen and sixteen. Few applications for the admission of colored children are now made. Under all the circumstances I think the school must close.
I have written to the schools for White children to see whether they are willing to admit colored children. Some of them will do so, and I presume that the best way to dispose of the matter will be to transfer such of the Bridgewater children as are willing to go to the white schools that are willing to receive them. at least my first effort will be in that direction.
Many thanks for your kind offer of further use of your buildings, and many thanks also for your past generosity.
Mr. Stitzer will aid me in dispersing of the children.
Yours truly
J. Mickersham, sup't."Collection
