Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 37
Page 37a-c includes three newspaper clippings, one of which is a April 25, 1918 article from the Germantown Independent Gazette [37a]. The others are undated.
The first [37a] discusses patriotism at local schools, and their role in the Liberty Loan campaigns. The articles notes, among other things, that "Where there is no outspoken patriotism in the schools at this time, indifference towards duties may be expected from the students when they attain manhood and womanhood" etc.
The second article [37b] bears the headline "Pulpit Wrath for Slackers: Dr. Ninde Arraigns Churches That Do Not Help the Liberty Loan and Women Who Scorn Food Rules," and notes that "Strong condemnation for several common varieties of evasion of patriotic duty was meted out in the First Methodist Church last Sunday night, when the pastor, the Reverend Dr. Edward S. Ninde, spoke on 'The Slacker.' Most impressive of all was Dr. Ninde's denunciation of churches, which under cloak of religious scruples, are discouraging loyalty."
The third article [37c] details the launching of the U.S. Liberty Lone at Hog Island. The ship was named by Mrs. Norton Downs Jr. [photo included]. Her husband, a lieutenant in the aviation service, lost his life during the war.
Pages are 7.5 x 10".Photograph Details
