Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 159. Two newspaper clippings, both undated and from unknown sources, are glued to page 159. The first, at left, bears a photo of William Hohenzollern, and comments: "This picture of William Hohenzollern is a copy of one published during the course of the war in a German magazine, the 'Die Woche' [The Week]. The page upon which it appeared had been torn from the the book by a Hun officer, and was found upon his person by the unit with which Sergeant Robert H. Wilkinson, son of Joseph R. Wilkinson, 5109 Hazel av., is a member. The picture shows clearly the withered left arm of the former ruler. It is one of the first of its kind ever published in this country," etc. To the right is a second undated clipping, with the headline "A Interesting Letter to the Kaiser." It provides satire to perceived German attitudes towards Americans and America, written in "stereotypical" English as a German would presumably write it: "First I started in my big offensive, vich vos to crush der fool Americans, but dey know so little about military tactics dat day vill not be crushed just as I vant dem," as an example. Pages are 7.5 x 10".
