Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 60
Four articles are glued to page 60. The first, 60a, notes "Lieut. Hazlehurst Dies" and continues with "Lieutenant Samuel Hazlehurst, of Company L, 110th Infantry, is dead of wounds received in action on September 28 [presumably 1918]. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Wright, Jr., 507 W. Chelten av., Germantown, have received official notice of his death. He was twenty-nine, went overseas in the spring, and was cited for conspicuous bravery at Chateau-Thierry. He was a graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, and a member of the Delta Phi fraternity" etc. A photograph of Hazlehurst accompanies the text.
The second article, 60b, notes that "Lieutenant Thomas B. W. Fales died while trying to save his brother officer. Although has death was reported some time ago, the story of his heroism has just come to his father, the Rev. Elish F. Fales, and his brother, Samuel W. Fales, 4407 Spruce Street... Lieutenant Fales was a nephew of John Wanamaker and was named for the merchant's son, the late Thomas B. Wanamaker."
The third article, 60c, bears the headline "Museum May Get No Coal." The associated article notes "When officers of the Site and Relic Society of Germantown recently made inquiry as to when the coal they had ordered last April would be delivered at the Society's museum in Vernon Park, they were told that the fuel administration had not yet approved this application and that it was likely no coal would be delivered at the Society's museum until there was no doubt that every dwelling in the city will have an abundant supply. About twenty tons of coal are consumed during the winter to heat the museum," etc.
The fourth article, 60d, announces new officers from the Germantown area, slated to be officers. These included: Elbert O. Day of 648 East Chelten Avenue, Joseph Fleitas of 8617 Germantown Avenue, Charles W. Brinton of 31 Carpenter Lane, and Carl J. Axford of 62 Harvey Street.
