Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 153. A single newspaper clipping, undated and from an unknown newspaper, is glued to page 153. This clipping bears the headline "Lincoln's First Levee Described by Old Nurse," and continues with "Lincoln's first presidential reception was described today, the 110th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, by Mrs. John H. Dye, 5810 Greene Street, Germantown, who was a nurse in the Civil War at the battle of Gettysburg. Mrs. Dye is eighty-seven years old... At that time Mrs. Dye's maiden name was Clarissa Jones. She was principal of the Rittenhouse School in Germantown when the Civil War began. She at once became active in various kinds of war work. When she was coming down Chestnut street one day, as she reached Ninth street, she saw a great crowd about the Continental Hotel. It was then that she learned for the first time of the declaration of war between the North and the South. She finally went into active service as a nurse... Mrs. Dye has been trying since 1905 to obtain a pension from the government, but never has succeeded." Includes two photos of Mrs. Dye- one then current, and one of her as a young woman. Pages are 7.5 x 10".
