Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 7, page 5
Please see notes for additional information.
Page 5 shows a photograph on the grounds at Manheim (Germantown Cricket Club) with individuals dressed in period clothing. In this photograph, individuals are gathered in front of a tent, the sides of which have been rolled up. There is however, one side piece of the tent which is visible and "mimics" a log cabin. The individuals (four females and two children) appear to be dressed as slave women demonstrating the various crafts they produced. (A close inspection of the photograph would seem to indicate that the females and children are wearing "blackface" make-up). To the left, one woman is standing behind a table upon which are various clay pitchers of different sizes and shapes. To the right in the photograph a long table holds various other products (rugs, blankets, baskets).
The three woman in the center of the photograph are dressed in plain full length dresses with a long apron in front tied at the waist. They are all wearing bonnets or pieces of cloth wrapped around the head. All three also are wearing another piece of cloth wrapped cross-wise over the chest. The two young children (possibly male) are dressed in knee length dresses and leg stockings. Both are holding trays containing (possibly) food items.
In the background are other displays depicting building facades (most likely tents with painted facades since all appear to be staked to the ground with taut ropes). In the far background are various mature trees. This "display" is situated in a large open field on the grounds of Manheim.Photograph Details
