Black and white photo. On Back "The old stone house, Main Street and Johnson Street is being torn down to make room for a modern structure. It has the reputation of being the oldest house in the town, has been built in 1698 and stands opposite the Chew mansion made famous by the Revolutionary events. Among the debris was found some old com buttons of the old times and other articles of no special import. The old plate containing the "1698" in the gable end was destroyed by the fall of wall, it having only been formed by plaster. The property was recently purchased by Mr. Souden of the Johnson Estate, who intends building a large dwelling on the site of the old relic, and also a row of neat houses above, which will extend as far as the line of the old mansion premises".
