Description

Sepia tone mounted print of the Sixth Annual Tour of the Philadelphia Bicycle Club in Vineland, New Jersey, September 26, 1885. Verso (from newpaper article), "The sixth annual run of the Philadelphia Bicycle Club was taken as projected, twelve members participating. The machines were hauled to the ferry by wagon, and they left Gloucester for Woodstown--22 miles--at 3.30 P.M. on Friday, 25th September, arriving at 6.30. This road was good except 3 miles, half on each side of Harrisonville. They were entertained in the evening at the house of Mr. Andrews by the Woodstown Club, a number of bright and handsome ladies gracing the occasion by their presence, so that with music, recitations and dancing, and bountiful refreshments, the evening was a highly entertaining one. The ladies were escorted to their homes by the cyclers, and in their choice gave the preference to the married men. Next morning they paraded with the local club through the town, and were off at 8 for Vineland--24 miles,--arriving at 1 P.M.; roads from Elmira to Willow Grove very sandy, requiring considerable walking. At Vineland Mr. E. L. Miller took photograhs of the others, grouped, grouped on the porch and on their wheels, etc. They left at 4.45 P.M. for Bridgeton, via Miliville, taking lower raod (good riding) by mistake, so that while riding it leisurely, the Millville Club, going out to meet them, was doing the same on the other road, and reached Vineland soon after they left. Several succeed in overtaking the Philadelphians, and escorted them into the town. The evening was very pleasantly passed at the South Jersey Institute with students and teachers, who gave them an enthusiastic reception. Several of the members were formerly students there. Next morning several returned home by train, but seven stuck to their wheels, arriving home about dusk, and having covered 105 miles since the start, and kept well together. All enjoyed the tour very much. In was, in every sense, a social one."
