Urban Archives Exhibit Ex 323
Label: "What probably may be considered the most important event in the history of the Germantown Historical Society since its foundation in 1900, was the removal of its museum from the Wister House in Vernon Park to its own property at 5214 Germantown Avenue (29). Owned by the City of Philadelphia, Vernon had been the home of the Site and Relic Society for many years. After the Society left, the building was restored in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration and used as a community center and as a branch of the public library.
John Wister, Jr, grandson of John Wister of Grumblethorpe, purchased the house in 1812; it had been built in 1803.Made/Created
