Description

Irregularly shaped porcelain plate with colorless glaze and dark green hand done over painting. Trees and stream with musical staff. Drawing of houses with tiller. Two seals. On back of plate: Founding of the Church of the Brethern 1723. Dec 25 Peter Becker with his band of twenty three followers wended (?) their way down the Indian trail, which is now Carpenter Street and Kitchen's Lane to the Wissahickon where the ice was broken and the unbaptised were immersed three times during the singing of Alexander Mack's baptismal hymn. They then proceeded to the house of Johannes Gumre (?) - Monastery Hill where the love feast--feet washing and communion were observed. As they separated two bright lights were seen in the distance. The holy fires lighted with mystic rites by the hermits of the ridge who had assisted in the baptism. Christopher Saver established the first German printing house in America--teh unbound sheets of German bibles, stored in the loft of the Dunker Church were used as gun wads during the Battle of Germantown, as well as the litter (?) for the horses by the British.
