Description

White porcelain body, colorless glaze with dark green handpainted over enamel. Painting of 2 houses with trees and oval pictures of George & Martha Washington. Tilles and signature. On back of plate: Gilbert Stuart lived in Germantown 1794-5 No. 514 the Main Street. He fitted up a barn in the rear as a studio and here he painted the famous Athenaeum portrait of Washington. General Washington and his lady were frequent visitors here and were often accompanied by Harriet Chew whose bright conversation helped to while away the weary hours of sitting. Notes

Label: This plate was painted 1904 by Julia B. McCormand a member of Germantown Chapter Nat. No. 56649 (she died in 1912) of the house in Germantown where Gilbert Stuart lived when he painted his famous portrait of Washington. Additional history on back of plate. While this was painted in 1904, the subject is an old one and this plate is uniquee in that it is the only one of its kind in existence. It has been in possession of Germantown Chapter and the plate was finished. We would be most happy to have it in the DAR museum. Doris F. Ritzinger, Librarian. Loan: Germantown Chapter DAR February 1969.
