Description
Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 5.
Photograph a: [top] is of the Robert's Mill. A dirt road is in the foreground leading to and past a stone building the background. A wooden "shed" protrudes from the side of the stone building. To the left of the "shed" in the photograph is another building with a tall chimney. In the far right corner of the photograph is a wagon (?) along the side of the main stone building. Outside of the "shed" to the left of the entrance is a white "enclosure". A "ramp" appears to lead upward to the entrance of the "shed". Original photograph year 1859.
Photograph b: [bottom] is a view of the Toll Gate in front of the house of John Smith, located on the south corner of Germantown Avenue and Rittenhouse Street. The front of the Smith House appears to face Germantown Avenue with the Toll Gate on Rittenhouse Street. A front and side view of the house is visible. The house is four stories with a two story rear "portion" and chimney in the rear. The photograph shows other houses on the left along Germantown Avenue and other buildings are visible behind the house on Rittenhouse Street. The Toll Gate appears to be open. Original photograph taken in 1859.
