Description

Cut work sampler by Amy Lewis. This type of sampler is also called holllie- point and reticella lace work. Sampler consists of nine blocks. Squares, 2,4, 6, 8 are hollie point. Sqaures 3,7,9 are reticella. Square 1 is a combination of both lace-making techniques. Hollie-point is a form of English lace making, done primarily for baby clothes, religious robes, and Christening robes. Reticella work is Italian in origin, usually is done in a geometric pattern. The center square, 5, is a rosette, built up of button hole stitches. Linen separates each lace square and the linen pieces have satin stitched triangular designs. The outer edge of the piece has an intertwining "S" border. The entire piece is attached to a fading blue satin backing. Cut work is done by sewing a block with a button hole stitch, then cutting away the fabric and filling in the void with the lace, which is really a series of tiny stitches, built upon one another. "Amy Lewis Her work 1759" stitched at bottom. Condition: good to fair, slight fraying of the satin most in good condition.
