Label: Italian immigrants initially rented housing in the area of East Rittenhouse and Ely Streets, called the Yards. As they became better established, they were ablt to purchase homes and move into other areas of Germantown. The Bessie and Sam Scarpello family is seen here on the steps of their house at Haines and Magnolia in the 1930s.
