Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 59
Two articles are glued to page 59. The first- 59a- is an April, 1918 clipping of the "Man on the Corner" column from the Germantown Independent-Gazette. In it, the article sings the praises of the Germantown High School. In particular, it notes "But in the abundance of glory, the distinguished achievements of the Germantown High School deserve to be singled out. Dr. Harry F. Keller, the principal, has a right to be proud of the enviable position his school has acquired by its loyalty and patriotism in the present crisis, and by its success in the Thrift Stamps campaign and its magnificent showing in the sale of Liberty Bonds.... The success of this small group says Dr. Keller, has been due to a large extent to the active leadership of the class president, Harry M. Kidd. He has been recognized for a long time as the ablest cartoonish in the school. A number of his artistic productions have appeared from time to time in the school paper, the Cliveden. His artistic ability lately came to the aid of the Third Liberty Loan campaign by the production of two posters which compare favorably with the professional posters elicited by the present war." The article continues with the lament: "Patriotic Songs Not Heard at the Friends' School," in which a visitor would find "no Liberty Loan posters on display, would hear no appeals for the sale of Liberty Loan bonds and would see no records of long lists of subscriptions which students have brought in," etc.
The second article [59b], "Plans for 'Liberty Sings'" notes "The usual 'Liberty Sing' will be held in Vernon Park tonight. Next Thursday night the Firemen's Band will play, and on Thursday night, September 26, there will be a festival program with music by the Police Band. The speaker next Thursday night will be P. H. Jones, who saw service with the American army in France and was sent home to undergo surgical operation. John S. Hart, director of the Vernon Park 'Sings,' will have charge of a big 'sing' in the Second Regiment Armory next Wednesday night."
