Shave, EdgeEntry/Object ID
1993.2.114Description
Edge shave leather-working tool with dark brown turned wood handle that narrows toward end. A brass ring dits on this end. Into this fits an iron blade with curved arm, a rectangular groove and a deep U-shape.
The skirt shave is larger than the edge shave and has a wider cutting edge. According to "The Dictionary of Leather-Working Tools c. 1700-1950," by RA Salaman, this variant of the edge shave is used "as an alternative to the round knife for thinning down the upper edge of a saddle skirt ready for sewing in; it can also be used for paring down the edges of other parts."
