Description

Two etchings found on pages 63 of scrapbook 2, "Pictorial Germantown Road and the Vicinity & Some of its Inhabitants. Compiled by George Clarence Johnson. Volume I. East Side." Etching c, at the top is of Gerhard Hendrick's (Heinrich) house. According to a caption it was built on property granted to Hendrick by Pastorius extending from Shoemaker's Lane (Penn St.) to church Lane and from Germantown Avenue to the township line. The caption adds that it was built in 1682 and was demolished in 1840 by Mehl, that the property passed to Isaac Shoemaker, son of George and Sarah Shoemaker, who married Hendrick's daughter, Sarah. Etching d is of the Shoemaker first farm or Rock House. A captions says it was on the north side of Penn Street east of the Reading Railroad bridge, that it may have been built in 1690, and that Penn preached at the site.
