2010.402.6Description
Black and white photo of snowy view, apparently of houses along West Tulpehocken Street, February 21, 1902. View was taken from upper story of one of the houses. Large amounts of ice and snow are visible on the roofs. See 2010.402.7.1-.2 for reprints. Notes on reverse are as follows: "Scene on Tulpohocken [sic] St, 2-21-02. A N E rain storm set in morning of above date, it rained hard all day and night, freezing as fast as it fell, by 2 P M the wires all over the city began to break and fall, people on the streets were on the alert $ as a wire showed signs of giving way in their neighborhood there was a rush for a doorway. Travel of all kinds was stopped or delayed, as the trolley poles could not make contact with the wire. In Germantown the branches began to break by this time & kept it up all night, whole trees breaking down, the reports were like cannons, and in the morning streets were entirely impassable for branches. Ice covered limbs weighing 16 times as much as the bare branch had done. A number of men & horses were killed in the city by fallen live wires, it took over a month to get things cleaned up."Photograph Details
