Description

Urban Village Exhibit Ex 10 Black and white photograph of Stenton November 30 1899 by Edward Hall Sanborn Label: Dinah, an African American servant, saved Stenton, home of the Logan family, from burning during the American Revolution. During the British occupation, an order was issued to burn all the mansions between Germantown and Philadelphia. Although seventeen houses were burned, Dinah's quick thinking saved Stenton. The two British dragoons who came to burn it went to the barn to get some straw to start the flames. While they were gone a British officer rode up looking for deserters. Dinah, in answer to his question, said she had seen two men who looked like deserters, and that they had just gone into the barn. When the soldiers returned, the officer seized them and marched them off to the provost guard, despite their indignant protests and explanations. Stenton was saved. Stenton is open to the public.
