Description

Photographs from Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 71 Photograph a [top]: The top photograph is a photograph of the Last Log Cabin originally located at the northeast corner of Germantown Avenue and Mermaid Lane. It was removed circa 1905 (see Notes). The building shown in the photograph is a two story structure. It appears that the side of the building faces onto Germantown Avenue with the main entrance facing onto the property itself. The building has a seamed metal roof and a brick chimney protruding above the roof line. There appears to be a small "addition" at the right (with a sloping roof). The windows have one large shutter. A white picket fence (with a gate) separates the property from Germantown Avenue. Another house is visible in the extreme left of the photograph and a large tree obscures part of the roof of the Last Log Cabin. Photograph b [bottom] is a photograph of the Dewees House located on the west side of Germantown Avenue directly across from the main entrance to Chestnut Hill College (9601 Germantown Avenue). The land on which it stood is today (2013) open space known as Harper's Meadow. The photograph shows a three story building with two dormer wiindows built into the roof line. The main entrance has a "half-round" transom atop the front door. To the left of the main structure are a group of people both sitting and standing. Beyond (and to the left) of this grouping of people are two one-story structures (possibly outbuildings for the Dewees House?) In the foreground to the right is a pile of dirt, stones and a wooden beam possibly indicating some construction/renovation (?) Photograph c is a second view of the so-called Yeakel/ Yaekel cabin, as seen from Germantown Avenue and Mermaid Lane, c.1880.
