Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 70 Photograph a [top]: The top photograph is a photograph of the Mermaid Hotel (see also catalog number 2013.5.1.69b). This photograph shows the Mermaid Hotel located at Germantown Avenue and Mermaid Lane taken from a point on the opposite side of Germantown Avenue. In this photograph Germantown Avenue is stone paved, although Mermaid Lane does not appear to be paved. A horse saddled to a wagon is visible in front of the hotel. Another horse appears partially visible between the three trees on the right, as does the rear of a wagon. A white "barn" structure is seen to the right of the hotel and an open shed is also visible to the right in the photograph. In the foreground (beyond the paved Germantown Avenue) are visible wagon tracks leading onto the Mermaid Hotel property. Photograph b [bottom] is a photograph of the Mermaid Hotel, Germantown Avenue and Mermaid Lane. This photograph would be an earlier photograph than the photograph in 2013.5.1.70a since Mermaid Lane is clearly not paved and/or graded. Wagon tracks are clearly visible on Mermaid Lane and leading onto the hotel property. In front of the hotel, above the overhang, is a sign idicating the Mermaid Hotel; another sign lists the name of Jacob Hess. In front of the hotel entrance is a horse saddled to a low open wagon around which three men stand. Some chairs are visible on the open porch to the right. In the background a portion of the white "barn" building is visible. Two mature trees are visible to the right in the photograph (both lower trunks are painted white).
