The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 7 contains a newspaper article pasted onto a white lined piece of paper. At the top of the paper, in handwriting, is the following: wissahickon creek. The title of the article has been cut off, by the author is identified as Edwin C. Jellett.
The article can be summarized as follows: The author begins with the present day (1894) Wissahickon Drive and its amenities and compares it with the trade road it displaced 50 years prior. He summarizes the Indian population and natural beauty and wealth in the time of the Hessians and the early settlers. He mentions Thomas Mifflin and the year 1822 when the Wissahickon Valley was mostly unknown and difficult to access. At that time, mills operated in the area and a few sportsmen and naturalists frequented the area. He cites an 1836 article which describes a situation hardly changed in the area since 1822. He cites the creation of the Wissahickon Road Turnpike Company in 1851 and the subsequent creation of said road in the ensuing years from the "Old Red Bridge" northward to County Line Road. The impetus for this road was mainly cited as trade, which created the beginning of a new era.Collection
