The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon
Page 107 contains (a) notes from Jellett and (b) a small newspaper clipping.
(a) These notes relate that at the time of the "Oil Craze" a man (name omitted) boarded at Robeson's knoll, bored a well, littered the place with oil barrels and charged admission to see the "oil well" in operation. It was discovered to be a fake and closed due to lack of interest. This story is attributed to Fell. Beneath Jellett's writing are the notations of Sphinx Rock, Pulpit Rock and Quaker Bonnet.
(b) is a short newspaper clipping. Above the article is Jellett's handwriting announcing "Wissahickon and early Mills". The short article cites Dr. Keyser as an authority and notes many of the mills along the Wissahickon . It mentions the quality and quantity of the waters of the Wissahickon as especially attractive to paper makers and also mentions Benjamin Franklin's suggestion of preserving the purity of the stream for future use as a supply of drinking water for the city of Philadelphia.Collection
