Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon Page 108 contains handwritten notes from Jellett. (a) These notes are entitled "Sawmill - Bancroft's". This short note recalls that upon the Ridge or Wissahickon Road, on the west side, stood the "Logwood Mill" or Bancroft's Sawmill. (b) These notes are entitled "Bolting Mill - Nailmill". This note recalls that immediately upon the Schuylkill River, on the west side of the Wissahickon creek, stood the bolting mill of Peter and Andrew Robeson. Afterward it was know as "the Foundry" and after alterations was occupied by the "State in Schuylkill". (c) These notes are entitled "Bolting and Nail Mill" and subtitled "Old Foundry". Fell knew nothing of the Old Foundry which once stood on the creek near the river. The building occupied by the Fishing Club (builders unknown) was one of the buildings owned and used by Bancroft's Sawmill, the location of which is now partly covered by "Riverside Park." The Bancroft mill was powered by water via a sluice under Ridge Road from the dam above. The sluice was built of logs and logs for the mill were brought in by way of Wissahickon Creek,. These recollections are attributed to Fell.
