The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon
Page 109 contains (a) handwritten notes from Jellett; (b) a short newspaper clipping; and (c) a reproduction of a photograph.
(a) These notes are entitled "Amos Jones Rolling Mill". This mill was the first cut nail factory in America; and it was operated by water power. It was purchased by the City in 1860. The mill stood on what was know as the Robeson Tract. This was a land grant of 500 acres from William Penn to Robert Turner made in 1684. The tract extended from the Schuylkill River to Township Line Road and from School House Lane to a short distance north of the Wissahickon creek. For a time it was known as "Sumac Park."
(b) This short newspaper basically replicates Jellett's notes in (a) above. The clipping notes that the tract was once knows as "Shamrock Park" and the word "Shamrock" is crossed out and replaced in pencil with the word "Sumac". The article notes that the tract was purchased by the City in 1860 and added to the Fairmount Park property.
(c) is a reproduction of a photograph (see catalog number 2013.34.1.102c for a detailed description already provided.Collection
