Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon Page 118 contains two photographs: (a, top) of the arched stone bridge spanning the Wissahickon, and (b) two bridges spanning the Wissahickon. (a) This photograph shows the Wissahickon creek in the foreground with a canoe most prominent on the shoreline in the immediate front of the photograph. This photograph is hand-dated 1902. A view of the shoreline is seen on the right and leads to the background where the multi-arched stone bridge spans the Wissahickon creek. The photograph is rendered in sepia tones and appears taken in Summer as the trees display ample foliage. (b) This photograph appears to have been reproduced in a newspaper and has a handwritten caption: "Wissahickon Looking Towards Ridge Road". Further handwriting identifies the date as 2-16-1905 and attributes the photograph to R.S. McCann(?) The view shows the Wissahickon creek in the foreground with a rocky shoreline on the right and a tree-lined shoreline on the left. A man can be identified in the near distance on the right standing in a small boat. In the background is a multi-storied stone building on the right (Robeson's Mill?). Immediately behind this building is the low , stone arched bridge carrying Ridge Road over the Wissahickon. Beyond this low bridge is a high covered railroad bridge carrying the railroad at a height over the Wissahickon. It should be noted that the '"iron bridge" (2013.34.1.112a) was the first railroad bridge built, followed by this covered bridge, followed by the multi-arched, stone bridge in 2013.34.1.118a. It should also be noted that although Jellett has labeled this photograph with a date of 2-16-1905, this photographic reproduction was likely published in 1905 but would have been originally taken many years perviously.
