Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 9 contains a newspaper article pasted onto a white lined piece of paper. On the left side of the paper (beside the newspaper clipping) is the handwritten notation: wissahickon. The newspaper clipping is a Letter to the Editor of the Germantown Independent Gazette (dated October 29, 1900). The Letter is entitled: The Wissahickon. Pretty Penn Sketch by an Admirer of the Beautiful in Nature. The author cites the crowds in the Wissahickon on the weekend last (October, 1900) who viewed the Fall Foliage, and laments those who did not realize the natural beauty so close to home and did not attend. The author remarks on the various varities of trees, shrubs, bushes, flowers, fauna, etc. prevalent in the Valley and compares the natural beauty with other areas that try to achieve what occurs naturally in the Wissahickon. The author cites the Indian names for various trees and fruits and speaks of the era of the Indian tribes in the Valley and the Indian names remaining to the present day (the author's present day of 1900 and the current year of this description in 2013): Tulpehocken, Wingohocking, Manayunk and Wissahickon. He/she delights in the beauty of the area in all the seasons. The Letter is signed Observer.
