Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon Page 123 contains a newspaper photograph entitled "The Dam As It Now Looks When Finished". A handwritten notation attributes the date as 8-3-1902. The scene depicted is that of the dam creating the Falls of Wissahickon as seen from one bank of the Wissahickon viewing the opposite bank. The stone wall of the dam is covered with a smooth stone top and a central indentation in the center top stone allowing the water to cascade into the creek below. Above the creek bank in the distance is visible a fence which delineates Wissahickon Drive (?). A prominent feature (in the distance) is the steps leading upward with metal railings on both sides. At the bottom of the steps are two matching stone columns topped by elaborate light fixtures. The steps turn at a right angle and continue up the hillside bordered on the far side by a stone wall, and lead up to Rochelle Avenue in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. These steps are known as "The Hundred Steps" and still exist today [2014].
