The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon
Page 142 contains: (a) a newspaper photograph; (b) a newspaper clipping entitled "Monster Wildcat Fights Man and Dogs"; and (c), a newspaper clipping entitled "The Man on the Corner."
(a, top) This newspaper photograph of two individuals in a rowboat (on the left) in the Wissahickon creek. On the right, is what appears to be Wissahickon Hall (although this attribution cannot be made with total certainty, and the possibility exists that it is of another hotel along the Wissahickon). The building is of three stories and the first two stories each have porches with wooden supporting columns. The foliage present throughout the photograph would suggest it was taken during the Summer season.
(b, bottom left) is a newspaper clipping entitled "Monster Wildcat Fights Man and Dogs" and relates the story of Henry C. Porter of Upper Roxborough who killed a wildcat after a fight during which he was scratched about the face and one of his dogs was badly bitten. At the top of the article, Jellett has handwritten the date as 3-18-1904. At the bottom of the article, Jellett has written the following caption: "I guess this fellow was 'all right'."
(c, bottom right) This newspaper clipping is entitled "Man on the Corner" and relates that some years ago (prior to Jellett's handwritten date of 4/18/1918) a herd of deer were introduced into Fairmount Park territory along the Wissahickon. When they wandered from the park territory to surrounding countryside and caused damge in gardens and truck patches, the deer were corralled and sent to game preserves in the state. The author points out that apparently not all of the deer were captured because deer have been seen at frequent intervals along the borders of the Wissahickon between Valley Green and the city line.Collection
