The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1, Part 2- The Wissahickon
Page 171 contains (at the top) Jellett's hand-written notes and (at the bottom) a newspapaer clipping. Both are entitled "Nuttall's Rock."
(a, top) Jellett's notes indicate that Nuttall's Rock was located along the Wissahickon Dirve above "Dead Man's Curve, and here was also found Nuttalll's spleen-wort.
(b, bottom) This newspaper clipping relates information about Thomas Nuttall and the spleen-wort, a fern plant that Nuttall discovered in the Wissahickon. The plant was originally discovered by Henry Muhlenberg in 1813, but in 1818, the plant became known as Nuttall's spleen-wort due to additional work by Nuttall. This fern was known to grow in crevices along the Schuylkill and in Tennessee, until it was also discovered growing along the Wissahickon in a rock crevice opposite the lower dam. The rock where the plant was found growing was then known as Nuttall's Rock. The removal of "Dead Man's Curve" along the Wissahickon did not disturb either the the rock or the fern.Collection
