The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 13 contains an 8 page printed article entitled "Romantic Wissahickon" which is affixed to a single sheet of white, lined notepaper. The word "wissahickon" is written in the upper left hand margin and on the bottom of the page is written "Philadelphia Record Almanac" and the initials "E.C.J." The article can be summarized as follows: The article begins citing Genral Armstrong and his lament at having to leave one fieldpiece in the hills of the Wissahickon following the Battle of Germantown. The author then mentions John Kelpius and the German mystics who lived in solitude in the Wissahickon hills at the Hermits' Well. The Monastery is mentioned as well as the birthplace of David Rittenhouse. An article in Appleton's Art Journal about the Wissahickon is mentioned and cites 'Devil's Pool' and 'Indian Rock'. The main article cites a total of over 6 million people in 1884 who walked the trails of the Wissahickon, and the decision in 1876 by the City of Philadelphia to purchase the Wissahickion Valley as a portion of of Farimount Park and the subsequent demolition of many unsightly mills along the creek. It ends by citing the unique features of the creek and park and the value to the City and uniqueness of its charm and beauty. The article also includes a number of photographs of the natural features, man-made structures and unique locations along the banks of the Wissahickon and within the Wissahickon Valley.
