Page 39 contains an article entitled "The Nixon Paper Company". In the center of the printed article is a photograph of Martin Nixon. The Martin and W. H. Nixon Paper Company was established in 1869 at the site of the Flat Rock Paper Mills, founded in 1691 by Wilhelm Rittenhouse in Manayunk. It was located on a small rivulet (now known as Paper Mill Run) running into Wissahickon Creek. In 1844, the mill neede to expand and moved to a tract of land between the canal and the Schuylkill in Manayunk , known as the Flat Rock Works. The Nixon mills initially supplied paper to local newspapers and then to book publishers. The company expanded and opened a Vine Street mill (at Vine Street and the Schuylkill River).
The Niixon and Rittenhouse families were joined through marriage and together established a lasting legacy of paper making in the Wissahickon Valley and the early Colonies.Collection
