Page 40 contains a photograph with a typed label that reads: "Birthplace of David Rittenhouse, Rear, from photograph by Henry V. Gummere." The photograph shows the rear of the David Rittenhouse birthplace. The building is a two and one half story stone structure (center right). That structure appears to be two separate buildings joined together, but built at different times. The left-most portion of the srtructure hasonly one visible window and the single doorway is at ground level. The right-most section has smaller windows on the first level and larger windows on the upper level. Both portions have different level rooflines. It should again be noted that the photograph shows the rear of the building. Consequently, the upper story would constitute the main level in the front of the building. In the foreground are two stone walls over which a wooden bridge has been constructed, allowing passage over Paper Mill Run. Two wooden fences border the "road" over Paper Mill Run. A small two story outbuilding is seen to the left of the main structure. The area is surrounded by mature trees. (For a photograph of the front of this structure, please see catalog number 2013.34.3.41, scrapbook page 41).Collection
