Page 55 contains two photographs:
(a, top) This photograph is labeled "The First Paper Mill in America" The photograph is actually of the David Rittenhouse birthplace, rather than a photograph of the first paper mill. The first paper mill was constructed somewhere nearby this site, but was destroyed in a severe storrn and rebuilt (c. 1702). The caption underneath the photograph reads: "Locatede on Wissahickon Creek, near Germantown. Among the first owners were William Rittenhouse and William Bradford. It was here that the paper was made for the 'Weekly Mercury', the first paper published in Pennsylvania."
(b, bottom) This photograph is labeled "Rittenhouse Paper Mill - First in America." It is an artistic rendering of the first Rittenhouse Paper Mill and depicts a four story structure, the first two stories of which are likely stone covered with stucco. The top two stories are wood clapboard. Doors and windows are drawn on every level. To the right of the structure, below the first level, would appear to be the water source (Monoshone Creek, also known as Paper MIll Run). The structure is surrounded by stone walls, wooden fencing and trees.Collection
