Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon Page 65 contains Jellett's notes as follows: John Sharpless kept the toll gate near Ammidown's mill for many years, and lived in a stone house on the bank of Monoshone Creek. When the changes in the Rittenhouse street park entrance were made, the house became very close to the Drive near the guard house. Neilsmith, the park guard, married a daughter of Sharpless, who was born at the site. (Neilsmith to E,C.J.) On the turnpike, south or west of the toll house, stood three stone dwellings, below the school and on the creek side of the road. A family named R_____(?). (Wm. Rudbond?) On the turnpike located as above, there were four homes. Wm. Dugan lived in one, and James Reardon lived in another. (Fell) On Rittenhouse Strreet, near the middle of the present drive, stood the toll house and gate kept by John Sharpless, who lived in a house on Monoshone Creek near the Wissahickon School. (Fell) Jellett met Neilsmith near Powhattain's (?) and asked him for pictures of John Sharpless, his (Neilsmith) father-in-law. Neilsmith promised to try to get them for Jellett.
