Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 22 contains portions of three printed articles, which appear to be part of the original article entitled "Report on the Acquisition of Lands for Fairmount Park". (this does not appear to be in sequential mode following pages 25 and 26 (see catalogue number 2013.34.1.21). These three articles are attached to a piece of white lined notepaper which is affixed to the scrapbook page. In the left hand margin is the word "wissahickon" written in pencil. At the bottom of the page is the handwritten notation: Park Report, 1878. This continuation is a combination of different sections of the report (what might be called "cutting and pasting"). This scrapbook page (22) contains three sections of the above mentioned report: Top (a): makes mention of Belmont Mansion and carriage sheds covered with a gravel roof. Ten shelters were constructed for Park Guards. It also mentions that the drive on the Wissahickon was repaired and all bridges placed in good order, with several old buildings demolished. The River Road was surfaced and other improvements were also made. (There is a pencilled notation to turn over the top article to reveal additional information on the back). Center (b): This portion of the article further details additional repairs/improvements made by the Fairmount Park Commissioners (mainly to the Wissahickon Drive (with demolitions, grading of land, creation of footpaths, etc.). Again, there is a notation in pencil to turn over the page to reveal further information. Bottom (c): This article further details repairs and improvements, mainly to the Wissahickon in the area of Valley Green.
