Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon Page 75 contains the following: (a, top, facing overlay) This consists of a newspaper clipping entitled "Famous Quarries." Jellett's handwriting indicates the article was from the Germantown Independent Gazette of 8-23-1901. The author (unknown) recounts a visit to the Rittenhouse Quarries on Rittenhouse Street near Fairmount Park. The author describes the work for which the stone, etc. is used and mentions the quarry has been in operation for nearly seventy years. Mention is also made that stone from this quarry was used in the construction of the steps connecting the Wissahickon entrance of the Park to the bridle path (see scrapbook, Volume 1, pages 126 (2013.34.1.126) and 130 (2013.34.1.130)). A photograph of the Rittenhouse Quarries is shown above the article and displays an overview of the quarry with several buildings and workers. (b, rear side of overlay) This contains a newspaper article entitled "Considering Park Extension." Jellett dates the article as 9-27-1917. The article discusses the proposal to extend the boundaries of Farimount Park by purchasing additional land in the vicinity of Wissahickon Avenue and Rittenhouse Street (to include property formerly occupied by the old quarry). The detailed map accompanying the article is a scaled drawing of the present park land and the proposed extension. (c, bottom) This newspaper clipping from the Germantown Independent Gazette (according to Jellett's handwriting) is a tribute to the memory of Robert K. D. McKinny [sic], a descendant of Danile McKinny (of McKinny Quarries). Robert McKinny was educated at the old Rittenhouse public school and the McKinny family lived in the residence where David Rittenhouse was born. Robert McKinny served in the United States Navy and was a celebrated veteran of the Civil War. His name was added to the names of Civil War veterans on the memorial tablet at Market Square after his death.
