Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon Page 76 contains the following: (a, top, facing overlay) This consists of a letter from a Thomas H. Shoemaker to Mr. W. W. Umstead asking several questions regarding the minutes of the Wissahickon Fire Company. Mr. Shoemaker requests that Mr. Umstead mark the letter with his answers to the several questions posed and he (Mr. Umstead) has done so with his answers evident from the handwritten notations. (b, top clipping under overlay) This clipping mentions that the Wissahickon Fire Company was formed on December 29, 1847 in Rittenhousetown. The majority of the men from this company were employed by the many mills in this area. The company was active until 1871, when a paid fire department was organized. The company's apparatus remained in their firehouse until 1886 and the members held meetings until 1890. (c. bottom clipping under overlay) This article appears to be a receipt for the amount of fifteen dollars, dated Rittenhousetown, May 4, 1868 for fifty feet of flagstone. The receipt is signed by James F. McKinny. The "customer" is likely Mr. Robert Shermer (the name written on the top of the receipt).
