Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon Page 86 contains two newspaper clippings: (a, all of column 1 and the top third of column 2) This clipping is entitled "An Old Deed." This article details the original deed of the Rittenhouse Paper Mill. The deed is listed as the property of Miss Margaret Rittenhouse and her sisters and was displayed at the Ledger Office by Daniel K. Cassell (who currently has possession of the deed). The article quotes from the original deed and relates that Rittenhouse was involved with other investors to start the mill. The article also mentions that the deed was never recorded and for some time had been though lost, and that it (the deed) has always been privately owned. (b, bottom tow-thirds of column 2) This article is entitled "Tribute To Rittenhouse." The article describes a lecture given by Dr. Maurice J. Babb of the University of Pennsylvania at the Vernon Park Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, in which Dr. Babb deplored the fact that the greatness of David Rittenhouse is not recognized, and that no adequate monument to him has been erected. The lecture was held under the auspices of the Site and Relic Society.
