The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon
Page 117 contains Jellett's notes:
The notes list additional pertinent facts regarding Rittenhouse Academy. Jellett has compiled a list of pupils in 1848; a list of pupils as of 1-30-1919. Under the heading "William Umstead", Jellett mentions that ground was set aside by the Rittenhouses and the building was constructed by neighbors (who apparently provided labor in lieu of money). Jellett also mentions that until the City took charge, the first floor was used as a basement. There was but one teacher and one class was on the second floor. Under the heading "Rittenhousetown", Jellett mentions that the Street was the road to the paper mill. There were four houses on it, and they were built by Wm. Umstead's father from stones of the old barn.Collection
