The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 27 contains the reamining portion of an article from the Public Ledger of 09-26-1895 which describes the proposed Wissahickon Park Extension and Speedway (the previous portion appeared on Scrapbook page 26, catalog number 2013.34.1.26). The second newspaper article (provenance unknown) has a pencilled date of 12/06/1925.
Left (a): This is a continuation of the article begun on Scrapbook page 26 and mentions (in addition to the extension of the Park to the Montgomery county line) some major improvements to include the creation of three lakes. The article also describes plans for a speedway from the Perkiomen Pike to Fort Washington.
Right (b): is a newspaper article entitled "Lost Cave Sought in Wissahickon". The article mentions a Germantown resident (William H. Shingle) who knew two trappers who recounted in years past a tale of a cavern in the Wissahickon hills. Mr. Shingle cites tradition in Germantown that suggests the cavern was used during the Civil War era as a hiding palce for runaway slaves who were cared for by Mennonites and Friends. The article also cites an old novel ("The Riversons of the Wissahickon") which features scenes from Rittenhouse Town.Collection
