The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 28 contains an article from the Evening Telegraph of May 2, 1900 which describes the Wissahickon Valley and the Wissahickon Drive as the "Switzerland of America". The top of the scrapbook page contains an artist's rendition of the Wissahickon creek, the natural surroundings and the Wissahickon Drive. The article itself describes the drive as the finest in the Park and speaks of the many improvements on the road, especially the elimination of "Dead Man's Curve" as a noted/needed improvement. The improvements and widening of the Drive are related to cost $25,000. A description of the construction of the actual roadway (to include materials utilized) is mentioned. Engineers were instrumental in designing retaining walls along the creek/roadway to reduce (if not entirely eliminate) flooding of the roadway and deposit of mud and debris.Collection
