The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 5 -The Wissahickon
Page 4 contains a typed page labeled "The Monastery of the Wissahickon" (extracted from Watson's Annals of Philadelphia &c.). This typed page describes the physical building known as The Monastery. It notes that at one time, a balcony surrounded the house at the second story level. it mentions John Kelpius and his band of followers who may have constructed the building. It also mentions another story of monks of the seventh day Baptist order who may also have lived there. In any event, there appears to have been a connection between those living at The Monastery and the brethern living at Ephrata in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The author also discusses the history of the building and its various owners over the years. The page ends with the first word of a sentence; however, only this typed page has been affixed to the scrapbook page. Please note that this typed page continues in this scrapbook on page 6 (2013.34.5.6).Collection
