Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 5 -The Wissahickon Page 8 contains two newspaper clippings: (a, left) This newspaper clipping is entitled "Death of Joshua Garsed". The article notes the death of Joshua Garsed, noted mill owner engaged in the manufacture of cotton for many years. While the article does not mention any connection, the typed page on scrapbook page 4 (see 2013.34.5.4) notes that the Garsed family was at one time an owner of the Monastery property , where they enlarged the millhouses and manufactured flax thread. Presumably, Joshua Garsed was a descendant of those family members associated with the Monastery. (b, right) This newspaper clipping is entitled "Landmark of the Wissahickon". The article (complete with photograph) notes the history of The Monastery. The records in the City of Philadelphia Recorder of Deeds Office can supply no infomation regarding ownership of the property prior to Joseph Gorgas. In 1852, the property was sold to William and Gordon Kitchen, from whom it passed to the Fairmount Park Commission (some years after 1852). The roadway leading to the Monastery from Wissahickon Avenue is now (2014) known as Kitchen's Lane. In the photograph, the view is of a square stone three story building with a large attic. Four windows can be seen at each story on both visible sides. A large porch with columns surrounds the two visible sides of the house seen in the photograph. A wide expanse of lawn is visible in the foreground.
