Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 5 -The Wissahickon Page 11 contains two photographs: (a, top) This photograph is contained on a note card and is titled "Old Monastery - Wissahickon". The photograph is colored and shows what is probably a rear view of the building. On the right is a short description of the history of the structure. The description cites the building as erected by Joseph Gorgas circa 1745 and selected because of its isolation. He was a mystic ( a member of the German Society of Dunkards) and collected around him a number of followers who lived here for some years at his expense. By 1761, most of the "monks" had drifted to Ephrata in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and the property since then has passed into many hands. It is now a possession of Fairmount Park. The note card is hand lettered with the date 1905. (B, bottom) This clipping contains a photograph of the Monastery with the caption: "The Monastery, before alterations were made, contained two fine specimens of open grates built to burn anthracite coal". The photograph shows a black and white photograph of the rear (most likely) of the structure.
