Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 5 -The Wissahickon Page 111 contains Jellett's notes, as transcribed: (a, top) John Gorgas Mill Heft At the present Allen's Lane stood the grist mill of John Gorgas. The mill stood upon the west side of the stream between present Allen's Lane and Gorgas Lane and one who searches carefully may yet discern along the road a foundation and lintel of the old mill. Allen's Lane did not originally cross the stream by a straight bridge but by a low bridge which corssed the stream diagonally to Gorgas Lane. Grooves in a rock in the bed of the stream yet show the position of the bridge. John Gorgas' house stood upon the bank above the road and his spring, yet bubbling, supplies the purest water to man and beast. The mill was owned and conducted by - - - It was last conducted by Jacob D. Heft as - - - - (b, bottom) B.1. Matthias Gorgas Mill Above John Gorgas Mill, upon Oil Mill, or Gorgas Run, at its discharge to Wissahickon creek stood a saw mill, built and conducted by John Gorgas. For a time it was conducted as a machine shop. Its last owner and operator was Matthias Gorgas who in it manufactured cotton batting.
