Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 5 -The Wissahickon Page 134 contains three newspaper clippings undated. Jellett has hand-labeled both a and c as "Pipe Bridge": (a, top left) This clipping relates that the Pipe Line Bridge was used for many years to carry water over the Wissahickon Creek. However, engineers did not account for the fact that the water froze very quickly during cold weather and caused burst overhead pipes with a resultant problem for the water supply for Germantown. Relocating the pipes to run under the Wissahickon remedied the problem. (b, left bottom) This clipping relates that the "Overhanging Rock" along the Bridle Path was rarely accessed until the Bridle Path was constructed and a portion of the Rock was cut away. From this point, looking toward the Livezey Lane bridge is a ravine over which extended the Pipe Bridge. (c, top right) The unknown author relates an excursion where the automobile could only reach as far as where the old pipe bridge crossed the Wissahickon. He then muses on the fact that the old iron pipes quickly froze the water they carried when the temperature dropped below 32 degrees Farenheit (which occurred frequently). The pipes frequently froze and burst cutting off the water supply from the Roxborough reservoir to Germantown. The remdey was to carry the water under the Wissahickon to higher ground.
